Raising a child is no mean feat and we know that the\npressures of parenting can lead to feelings of guilt. With the current global\nsituation presenting families with new and unfamiliar challenges, we were\ninterested to explore the concept of parental guilt and how this varies amongst\nour customers across the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We surveyed over 2,000 mums and dads in the UK,\nIreland, the Netherlands, France, Italy, and Portugal to discover how parents\nin each region experience parental guilt. To our surprise, we found that\nBritish parents are afflicted by more guilt than any other parents in Europe,\nwith an incredible 78 percent of parents in the UK feeling guilty in relation to\nraising their child. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s more, this feeling is experienced often, with\nthe average British parent feeling guilty twice every day on average. This\nequates to a whopping 50 times per month or 595 times per year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most common causes of\nparental guilt in the UK<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Letting children\nhave much screen time (42 percent)<\/li>
  2. Not spending\nenough time with their children (33 percent)<\/li>
  3. Not playing with\nthem enough (32 percent)<\/li>
  4. Not cooking from\nscratch (26 percent)<\/li>
  5. Not seeing their\nchildren enough due to working long hours (25 percent)<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Comparing the nations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This contrasts to\nattitudes towards parenting elsewhere in Europe, with Irish parents most likely\nto feel guilty about not organising enough hobbies for their children and French\nand Italian parents more likely to regret not arranging play dates with other\nparents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Sweating the small stuff<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The research found\nthat Brits also sweat the small stuff, with many reporting feeling guilty about\nnot mending their children\u2019s clothes when they get damaged, writing their\nchildren\u2019s name in their clothing instead of sewing in a name label, and getting\ncaught on their smartphone when they are with their children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Analysing this further<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Interestingly, our study found that this guilt is\noften disproportionate, with many parents feeling guilty about things they know\ndon\u2019t genuinely impact their children negatively. For example, while almost\nhalf of British parents feel guilty about losing their temper with their\nyoungsters, only 38 percent believe this actually affects their child\u2019s\nwellbeing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The influences<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    When asked what\ninfluences the pressures they put upon themselves, parents across Europe agreed\nthat the number one factor was their own perception of what makes the perfect\nparent. However, there are a host of contributing factors, with British parents\nalso heavily influenced by society\u2019s expectations, how their parents raised\nthem and how other parents might perceive them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    By contrast, Italian\nand Dutch parents are far more concerned about the wider community\u2019s opinion of\nthem, while Portuguese parents are conscious of their employer\u2019s perception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    What the experts say<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Commenting on the\nfindings, Parenting Expert Bea Marshall commented: “Guilt is common among\nall parents and yet it actually makes it harder for us to parent in the ways we\naspire. Guilt stems from our fears that how we raise our children may impact\ntheir futures. These may be fears about physical and mental health,\nrelationships and social success or financial independence. Our worries may\nalso be related to what others think of us and our children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cThere is no such\nthing as a perfect parent and fears that we are falling short lead to guilt.\nThe differences we see between men and women are likely due to multiple factors,\nsuch as differences in parenting responsibilities and professional commitments,\nbut also due to the different ways men and women navigate parenting. Women\noften carry a full mental load leading to constant thinking and emotional\nresponses. Men are more likely to think about, and act on, one thing at a time\nleading to a smaller emotional response.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The impact of COVID-19 on parental guilt<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    With current COVID-19\nrestrictions placing families under more pressure than ever before, these\nlevels of guilt are at an all-time high. In fact, almost three quarters of UK\nparents are feeling additional guilt due to the lockdown measures. This is\noften due to how bored their children are (31 percent), not letting their\nchildren spend time with relatives (26 percent), keeping them indoors (26\npercent), and not home schooling them properly (25 percent). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It was fascinating to\nfind that parents from all countries feel guilty about a huge range of things,\nfrom not spending enough time with their youngsters, through to seemingly less\nsignificant things, like not ironing their clothes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    We hope that our\nresearch highlights that parents shouldn\u2019t be so hard on themselves, and that\nopting for convenience, such as using stick-on name labels or cooking using\npre-prepared ingredients, will not have an negative impact on their children\nbut may save an awful lot of stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
