At\nMy Nametags, we know that raising a child is no easy task for parents. After\nnoticing a range of family members ordering name labels for children in recent\nyears, we were intrigued to find out how many people are involved in a child\u2019s\nlife in the UK and whether the proverb, \u2018it takes a village to raise a child\u2019,\nrings true for families across Britain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So,\nwe surveyed 2,000 mums, dads, and children in the UK to find out more about\ntheir support network and delve deeper into the role that the wider community plays\nin the upbringing of a child. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nresults<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Our\nresearch found that it takes, on average, an astonishing 6.5 adults to raise a\nsingle child in the UK, demonstrating the huge role that those outside of the\nimmediate family unit play when it comes to bringing up a child. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\naddition, a quarter of parents agree that it can take as many as 10 people to\nraise a child, with the majority stating that the main attribute needed to be\ninvolved in a child\u2019s upbringing is love. In fact, this ranked even higher than\nbeing related to the child or regularly looking after them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nrole of the wider community<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Our\nresearch also revealed the different roles that the wider community plays when\nbringing up a child in the UK. Grandparents were found to be a key pillar in\nparents\u2019 support systems and are heavily relied upon for childcare, with almost\nhalf of parents relying on grandmothers to babysit whilst parents are at work,\nand quarter regularly calling upon grandfathers. In addition, grandmothers are\nbelieved to have the closest rapport with children, as well as teaching them\nmore than anyone else in the family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\nalso found that older siblings have a significant influence over children, with\na quarter saying they have the most influence over their child\u2019s bad habits and\n16 percent of parents agreeing they have the biggest impact on their personalities.\nChildren also agree, with a fifth stating they have the most fun with their\nolder siblings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interestingly\nthough, despite this village mentality, it is often only teachers that parents\nare happy to let discipline their child outside of the family unit, according\nto our research. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\nthe experts say<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Commenting on the\nfindings, Bea Marshall, Parenting Expert and Founder of Yes Parenting, said, \u201cHumans\nare generally social creatures who thrive in communal and cooperative\nenvironments. Nowadays it is common for families to live away from their\nextended families and without the day to day support of their immediate\nneighbours. However, it is still so important for families to create a network\nof support as they raise their children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen other people help\ncare for children, it provides parents with an opportunity to recharge, work or\nplay. Those other people also give children a secure set of relationships in\nwhich their needs for connection, safety, and belonging are met. Children have\nan opportunity to learn from the different people around them and they receive\ndifferent things from each person – one may be more playful, another more\nnurturing, for example. Each person in a child’s life contributes something\nunique that helps them to grow into a well-rounded individual, while offering\ncrucial support to their parents.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nimpact of COVID-19 on parents<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The\ncurrent global situation is also presenting families with new and unfamiliar\nchallenges. With some schools and nurseries remaining closed and social\ndistancing measures still in place, parents are unable to rely on the wider\ncommunity as they usually would.  As a\nresult, they must take on a host of new roles, becoming their child\u2019s teacher,\nsports coach, best friend, confidant, and everything in between. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To\nget a clearer understanding of how this time is affecting families across Britain,\nwe spoke to Zoe Vernon, mum to Jess, aged 4. Commenting on the impact of the\ncurrent restrictions on family life, Zoe said, \u201cI am usually at work\nduring the week so my daughter spends a lot of time with our child minder who\npicks her up from nursery four times a week, so it\u2019s strange for her not see\nher. She really misses spending time playing with my younger sister too, and\nshe can\u2019t wait to get back to her swimming lessons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor me, I felt really\nanxious at the beginning because of all the changes. Now we have a bit of a\nroutine which has certainly helped, and it has been nice to have the\nopportunity to take on teaching and the extra roles I wouldn\u2019t normally do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Although every\nhousehold will have their own approach to parenting, it has been interesting to\nsee how important the wider community is to parents when raising a child in the\nUK, and how each individual helps to shape a child\u2019s life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the effects of\nCOVID-19 continuing to impact our everyday lives and routines, it has been particularly\ninteresting to speak to parents about their experiences and how they are adapting\nto the situation. We found that, although parents and children have found new\nways of living during the crisis, they are keen to get back to their normal\nroutine as soon as possible, suggesting that this unusual time in history has\nonly reinforced the importance of including the wider community in the\nupbringing of a child. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
