At My Nametags, we know\nhow quickly children grow and how fast families can get through clothes.\nWhether it\u2019s stubborn stains or growth spurts, the turnover of clothing in\nfamilies can feel very high. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, recent figures\nfrom WRAP suggest that extending the lifespan of clothes by just three months\ncould result in a 5-10 percent reduction in carbon, water, and waste footprints.\nSo, to try to understand this issue a little better, we conducted research into\nparents\u2019 attitudes towards second-hand clothing for their children. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

THE\nFINDINGS <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

To our surprise, our\nstudy found that more than one in 10 UK parents throw their children\u2019s uniforms\naway once they have outgrown them, even if they are still in a wearable\ncondition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to\ndamaged items, almost half of parents said they would prefer to throw the\ngarment away than attempt to fix it. What\u2019s more, over half of families own\nclothing that they have never worn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It seems parents still\nconsider new to be best as 81 percent always buy their children\u2019s school\nuniforms new. There are several reasons behind this, with many suggesting it is\neasier (31 percent) and that they want their kids to have the latest things (19\npercent). In addition, nearly half (41 percent) said they don\u2019t like the\nthought of their children wearing previously owned clothes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While it seems that\nsome proactive measures are being taken to make clothing last longer, with\nalmost a third of parents buying uniforms in bigger sizes so their kids can\ngrow into them, our study found that school uniforms are still being replaced,\non average, every 10 months \u2013 the equivalent to one uniform for every school\nyear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interestingly, despite\nsome parents in the UK adopting a throwaway attitude to uniforms, the research\ndid suggest that parents are more likely to donate their old clothes to charity\nshops than they are to purchase second-hand clothing. In fact, over half of\nparents donate uniforms to charity shops once they have been outgrown,\nsuggesting that there is a disconnect between the number of people who want to\ngive clothing a new life, and those that actually do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHAT\nTHE EXPERTS SAY<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Commenting on parents\u2019\nattitudes towards buying second-hand, Dr Jo Hemmings, Behavioural Psychologist,\nsaid: \u201cThere are a number of reasons why parents are reluctant to purchase second-hand\nuniforms for their children and continue to buy new year on year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFirstly, the word\n\u2018second-hand\u2019 has the connotation that somehow parents are not doing the best\nby their children. \u2018Brand new\u2019 has much more positive connotations. In addition\nto this, parents know that children can be very judgemental of each other in\nterms of clothing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn both instances, the\nparents\u2019 attitudes towards second-hand clothing stem from their inherent sense\nof pride \u2013 a fear that people will assume that they can\u2019t provide for their\nchild effectively if they can\u2019t dress them in a brand-new school uniform. This\ntype of pride, which is primarily driven by other people\u2019s opinions, is known\nas \u2018hubristic pride\u2019 and adds very little positive value to life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHowever, there is a\nsecond type of pride, \u2018authentic pride\u2019, which is centred around the fulfilment\nand achievements of yourself and those around you. This has a much more\npositive value and, importantly, cannot be achieved by wearing a new blazer. It\ncan, however, be achieved by teaching children valuable lessons about the\nenvironment and the fact that the clothes they wear have no impact on their\nability to \u2018fit in\u2019 or to be successful in life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

STRETCHING\nTHE LIFESPAN<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With awareness of the environmental impact of our clothing growing, it is important for us all to consider how our attitudes towards the disposal and re-use of clothes could be affecting the planet. Clothing which has been cared for can and should be reused, and with a little help from a name tag, can become another child\u2019s personalised piece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
