According to our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mynametags.com\/blog\/2026\/04\/the-parenting-divide-research-shows-society-still-expects-mothers-to-take-on-more-of-the-childcare-load\/\"><strong>latest survey results<\/strong><\/a>, guardians are expected to spend more than 75 hours per week on everyday parenting tasks. That\u2019s around 67% of the time spent awake!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means quality time together as a family is often cut short as parents juggle an overwhelming number of daily tasks, including cooking, shopping, cleaning and washing, on top of work schedules and commitments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having worked with families for more than 20 years (and raised a few children of our own during this time), we know exactly how this feels. So, we have put together some of our favourite tips and tricks to help reduce the mental and physical parenting load.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pay the \u2018Future You\u2019 parenting tax<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>When the to-do list seems never-ending, no one can be blamed for focusing only on what needs to be done to survive that day. However, spending an extra 10 minutes on a task now can save 30 \u2013 and a lot of stress &#8211; later down the line. We like to refer to this as \u201cpaying the Future You tax\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, next time you\u2019re about to start a job, ask yourself \u201c<em>could I invest a bit more time now to make life easier for my future self?<\/em>\u201d. This might include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Batch cooking<\/strong> \u2013 Cooking double quantities of meals and snacks often doesn\u2019t take much longer than making fewer portions, but can be invaluable in getting you some time back when you most need it. Planning cooking sessions when you have a bit more time and energy at the weekend can make a huge difference to your week, ensuring you have easy, nutritious meals and snacks on hand when you\u2019re in a rush. It might be the last thing you feel like doing after a busy day, but your future self will thank you for it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Doubling up on essentials <\/strong>\u2013 Buying double of essentials like wet wipes, nappies, plasters and dummies every time you stock up will allow you to keep supplies both upstairs and downstairs so you always have what you need to hand, the moment you need it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Get comfortable cutting some corners as a parent<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes, the key to a happy family life is accepting that you can\u2019t do everything. Some corners will have to be cut, and that\u2019s OK. Next time you\u2019re feeling overwhelmed by your to-do list, try breaking each task down into actions and asking yourself: \u201c<em>could I achieve the same outcome quicker if I stopped worrying about it being perfect?<\/em>\u201d. Some great examples that\u2019ll help reduce the parenting load include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Save ironing for best <\/strong>\u2013 The idea of freshly ironed pyjamas, socks and fitted sheets might appeal but, in reality, no one sees these things. Saving the ironing basket for essentials only \u2013 think shirts, trousers, and blouses \u2013 can save hours a week. And, trust us, your family\u2019s life won\u2019t feel any less joyful just because your child\u2019s socks haven\u2019t been pressed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Choose stick-on name labels <\/strong>\u2013 There\u2019s no doubt that labelling your children\u2019s belongings can save a lot of money, time and heartache by preventing treasured clothes and toys from going missing. But there\u2019s no need to spend hours painstakingly sewing labels into every single item. However, in reality, there are some nights when we\u2019re tired, hungry and just want to put something filling and nutritious on the table fast. The good news is, quick doesn\u2019t need to mean \u2018bad\u2019. Stocking your cupboards, fridge and freezer with short-cut staples will mean you can still rustle up a healthy meal for the family without slaving over the stove. Ingredients like pre-chopped frozen vegetables, microwave grains and ready-made sauces (ideally those that only use ingredients you recognise \u2013 we love <a href=\"https:\/\/mr-organic.com\/product\/organic-italian-kids-veggie-pasta-sauce-tomato-carrot-parsnip\/\">Mr Organic<\/a>) are all fantastic for making the parenting load feel a little lighter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Use your team (your children!) to support you<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Whilst it can be tempting to manage everything ourselves, giving children a little extra responsibility is often beneficial for both their development and our own sanity. Plus, turning everyday chores into a group activity is a great way to create extra opportunities to spend time together as a family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are a few ideas for getting started, depending on the age of your child:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Introduce responsibility early<\/strong> \u2013 Empowering children to do things by themselves, such as getting dressed, grabbing a snack or choosing what game to play, is an effective way to start building strong habits that will save you time later down the line. Start by offering children two choices. For instance, giving them two outfits to choose from when they\u2019re getting themselves dressed in the morning. This will avoid overwhelm or procrastination as they get used to having a bit more responsibility.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Gamify everything<\/strong> \u2013 Whilst preparing dinner, sorting washing or unpacking shopping might feel dull to us, with a little creativity, they can become fantastic games for little ones. Turning dinner time into an imaginary restaurant or making a memory game out of pairing socks are great ways to keep kids engaged and start to build the habit of helping out from a young age.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Teach the value of contribution<\/strong> \u2013 When your children are a little older, giving them regular chores, such as keeping their bedrooms tidy or setting the dinner table, can be a great way to reduce your load slightly while teaching them a valuable lesson about work and reward. Design a reward system that works for you and your child, and be sure to tie treats directly back to contribution.
